Christopher H. @ChristopherMontanaHaynes Mar 5 Vicious Fun is a masterclass in maximizing a limited budget through pure style. The premise is solid—a horror-nerd "idiot" accidentally stumbling into a support group for professional slashers—and the execution is shot beautifully with a great neon-soaked aesthetic. The real standout here is the casting. The "femme fatale" role is handled perfectly, providing a sharp, capable contrast to the lead, who is a complete, believable goofball (which works perfectly for the story's stakes). The acting is on point across the board, and the overall vibe is absolute dynamite. Where the film unfortunately falls short is in the practical effects. The limited budget is obvious during the action scenes, and they lack the impact needed for a top-tier horror-comedy. With a little more investment in the gore and stunts, this would have been an instant classic. As it stands, it’s still a fundamentally good movie that succeeds through sheer personality. When she gets into, the driver is a serial-killer, but she stabs him to death first. Meanwhile, the film critic and writer of the horror magazine Vicious Fanatic, Joel (Evan Marsh), interviews the director Jack Portwood (Gord Rand) of low budget horror movies, and gives the idea of a taxi driver serial-killer. Joel returns home and sees his roommate Sarah (Alexa Rose Steele) returning home with her new boyfriend Bob (Ari Millen). Joel has a crush on Sarah and decides to follow Bob to check whether he is married. Bob stops at a Chinese restaurant and Joel starts a conversation with him at the bar, drinking a lot of booze with him. Bob leaves the bar with another woman and the drunken Joel faints in a service room inside the restaurant. When he wakes up, he walks dizzily and sees that the restaurant is closed. He stumbles upon a group of men seated in a circle of chair – the psychotic serial-killers Fritz (Julian Richings); Mike (Robert Maillet); Hideo (Sean Baek) and Zachary (David Koechner) - and a woman, Carrie (Amber Goldfarb), discussing how to kill and dispose of a body. Joel is mistakenly taken as Phil, who is missing, but when Bob arrives, he is exposed. Carrie helps him and he learns that she belongs to an organization of vigilantes that get rid of serial-killers, and she killed Phil. She also kills Hideo in the kitchen. However, Joel activates the fire alarm and now Carrie and he have to flee from the police and from the killers. “Vicious Fun” (2020) is a great Canadian comedy-horror movie, with a hilarious and full of action story. The loser Joel is a film critic with an unrequited crush on his roommate and gets into trouble when he decides to investigate her new boyfriend. On the other side, Carrie is a vigilante, experienced in murdering serial-killers that teams up with Joel. His muddles are hilarious, but in the end, he helps Carrie. The scene during the credits shows Jack Portwood using the idea of the taxi driver driller. It's funny, random, wild, violent and bloody. Nothing about Vicious Fun was ever predictable, and performances in the film were also fun.  Additionally, we have a soundtrack from the '80s, which only put an even bigger smile on my face. For the most part, the pacing is excellent, but the film does slow down ever so slightly before the third and final bloody showdown.  Combined, these factors will leave audiences wanting more films like this one.
