Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Mar 9
The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

That said, the film also delights in showing blood, bones and guts, so be warned if you're not in the mood for a glut of flying viscera. Go to Full Review

Fortage T @RT76766245 2h An alien robot chases some soldiers. That's it, that's the story. Just not good. See more Silver_Cord T @RT23996448 2h Alan Ritchson in yet another great film. He isn't one to shy away from a strong, military lead role. Mr. Finish-Line turns the Sci-Fi Action into something more than what it ever was going to be. The cast was well chosen fodder, no real names to eclipse the action hero. Jack Reacher meets War of the Worlds (Ground Zero). See more H K @Hykerr 11h I really loved Alan in Reacher TV series. If you havent seen it watch that instead of this. If you want to watch American milatary go against aliens watch Predator (oringinal with Arnie). This is a very pale imitation. Altgough cinematography is excellent. Everything else lets it down. So frustratingly bad and not even bad enough to be good. Very much a missed opportunity for a vehicle for such a charasmatic leading man. Maybe less would have been more. See more Robert T @rtantalo 12h This is what would happen if you crossed Independence Day with Predator and it sucks. Horrible movie. Misses all the successful parts of the other movies. See more Marcus B @RT57223842 16h I personally believe this film did have potential but overall was very poorly executed. The story where he made a promise and despite what happened in the beginning he feels he needs to keep that promise true in memory of his fallen brother hoping for closure. Something didn’t feel right about the "enemy" being a gigantic walking self thinking robot either… leaving the audience no answers about why they came or who or what even sent them. I think the fact during the "climax" of the film, which should entice the audience to sit down and keep them engaged into the film, I actually paused the film to watch YouTube tells you all you need to know really! See more GrandPauseFilm T @GrandPauseFilm 19h If you thought Storm Troopers were bad shots - wait until you see the invading alien war machine. I should also mention, it's amazing US military vehicles can withstand an enormous amount of alien made bombs and weaponry. Oh, do you need more? Explosives don't hurt it, but rocks do. I wish people were smarter, and not giving these movies positive ratings so they start giving a crap about making movies believable. See more Read all reviews
