Edmond Dantes Jr. (Louis Hayward), the dashing son of the Count of Monte Cristo, finds his own adventure in the kingdom of Lichtenberg. Although the Grand Duchess of Zona (Joan Bennett) rightfully rules over the territory, she is engaged in a power struggle with evil Gen. Gurko (George Sanders), who conspires to take over. Dantes dons all manner of cunning disguises to come to the queen's aid, taking on the identity of a banker, a revolutionary and many others.

Tim M @tgmacman 03/09/2025 Despite inheriting little connective tissue from its predecessor or the Dumas novel, The Son of Monte Cristo manages to capture the same spirit all the same. See more 08/28/2016 Sword-fighting adventure. Not brilliant, but fun. George Sanders is understated (and might I add, sexy) as the calmly calculating, jackbooted military leader determined to be king. The leading lady and gent are as charming as the script allows. Louis Hayward and Joan Bennett give decent performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. George Bruce did an alright job directing this movie.
