Private detective Johnny Fletcher (Albert Dekker) tries to pack up and leave his apartment without paying rent, but while escaping he stumbles upon a corpse and a gold coin. Suddenly finding himself mistaken for a murderer, Johnny must clear his own name by finding out who the real killer is. With the coin his only clue to go on, Johnny eventually crosses paths with a mysterious singer named Janet Morgan (Evelyn Ankers) and a smuggling ring that just may have something to do with the murder.
