Sam Adams Time Out Chicago 07/02/2018
The movie offers a few plausible explanations as to what might have been wrong with Diane Schuler, but ultimately it tests her family's, and its audience's, ability to accept without understanding. Go to Full Review

Linda M @lindamindel Jan 3 There's Something Wrong With Aunt Diane is a frustrating watch. The answers are given within the first half of the documentary, Diane was drunk and high and crashed into an oncoming vehicle. Killing 8 people including herself and her daughters and nieces. If you want something groundbreaking, look elsewhere. The perspective we follow for most of the doc is that of the widowed husband and sister-in-law who believe beyond a reasonable doubt that Diane was not drunk or high. No, they reason, she had an abscessed tooth which caused a stroke, so she accidentally drank vodka during her stroke thinking it was water. It's sad to see, and even more frustrating to see them try to twist Dr. Werner Spitz's words to justify their narrative. To the director's credit, she doesn't justify these ideas. Rather, she gives the two just enough rope to hang themselves throughout the documentary. Showing back to back conflicting narratives, and everyone supporting the theory talking themselves in circles. See more J M @jeffmarshallmovieblogger 02/11/2024 The tragedy that occurred at the hands of Diane Schuler is beyond devastating - it's unimaginable. The lives of multiple family and friends were forever changed in the course of a few moments. Like most of these horrendous tales, the absolute truth will never be known. The trouble I had with this documentary is that I couldn't figure out what the filmmakers were trying to accomplish. Diane's autopsy showed alcohol and marijuana in her blood, and a bottle of vodka was found in the vehicle. Her husband and sister-in-law spend the entire film insisting that Diane did not abuse drugs or alcohol and that the findings must be incorrect. Do the filmmakers want us to believe that the autopsy was incorrect? Are they trying to paint a portrait of loved ones in denial? Is the point of the film that we never truly know anyone? It's never made clear, and this lack of focus is detrimental. Interviews include childhood friends of Diane's who hadn't seen her in a decade and medical/psychological professionals who had never met her and speak in generalities. It's certainly understandable why someone felt the need to detail the tragedy, but it's ultimately a very frustrating experience due to its lack of clarity and overall vision. It ends up feeling pointless, which is the last thing you want to feel when faced with such devastation and pain. - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook) See more Elvis P @RT45019792 09/01/2023 I have idea of why people are being negative. This is very good. I'm stingy with stars. Recommend See more 05/18/2022 This documentary was extremely heartbreaking. It seems as though the family is searching for answers that are right in front of them but are choosing not to believe it. See more 04/23/2021 On one hand, you’ve got to feel for this family, as they’ll never know or accept what led to the decisions that Diane Schuler made that day. On the other hand, their naïveté as to not believe she was intoxicated when there is clear medical evidence of her condition is astounding and almost infuriating. The plot of this documentary lacks any kind of resolution, which is unfortunate. It does, however, accurately depict the family’s desperation for answers and denial of events, which is what made it a mildly entertaining watch.
