At an Army barracks in Hawaii in the days preceding the attack on Pearl Harbor, lone-wolf soldier and boxing champion Prew Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) refuses to box, preferring to play the bugle instead. Hard-hearted Capt. Holmes (Philip Ober) subjects Prew to a grueling series of punishments while, unknown to Holmes, the gruff but fair Sgt. Warden (Burt Lancaster) engages in a clandestine affair with the captain's mistreated wife (Deborah Kerr).

After hearing so much about this film and its iconic status in cinema history, I had to see what all the hype was about. I came to realize that From Here to Eternity is a dated, lackluster film that hinges on interpersonal conflict, which ultimately feels underwhelming to audiences looking for something more engaging.

Burt Lancaster and Kerr's soap opera scenes are difficult to sit through and drag on for too long. They seem at odds with the rest of the pictures' more "realistic" approach, elevated by Montgomery Clift's fine acting but not enough to compensate for lacklustre storytelling. This movie seemed more aimed at the housewives of middle America who require a Disneyfied version of reality. The author James Jones didn't appear to be impressed with it either.
