Meek flower shop assistant Seymour (Rick Moranis) pines for co-worker Audrey (Ellen Greene). During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he names Audrey II, which feeds only on human flesh and blood. The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the previously struggling store. After Seymour feeds Audrey's boyfriend, Orin (Steve Martin), to the plant after Orin's accidental death, he must come up with more bodies for the increasingly bloodthirsty plant.

The sets and plants were amazing. It’s mostly really beautifully shot. The music was annoyingly catchy. The alternate ending would have been so much better. It started so well grabbing my attention and getting me dancing but there were some really boring bits. It feels like it would have been better as a stage show but still fun.

Frank Oz’s Little Shop of Horrors is a masterclass in dark musical comedy that remains just as sharp today as it was in 1986. I have watched this countless times and it never gets old or loses any effectiveness; the blend of incredible practical effects and Howard Ashman’s witty storytelling creates a world that is uniquely immersive. From the Motown-inspired Greek chorus to the soulful hunger of Audrey II, every song is a banger, making it one of those rare films where you simply cannot pick a favorite track. It’s a campy, neon-soaked delight that continues to grow on you with every single viewing.

Watched this several times growing up and adored Audrey II and the singing trio Crystal, Ronette and Chiffon; they really made the film. However, the weak plot and Ellen Greene's dodgy wig, horrendous singing and phoney "innocence" were always grating and off-putting. In the 1960 film, Audrey is a brunette with a "classy" feminine appearance and assertiveness. Curiously, in this they chose to make her a dumb blonde; it turns out Greene wanted her to look "angelic" and "innocent". The irony of that is she looks the exact opposite—old, cheap, and tacky—as though she ought to be playing Seymour's reformed streetwalker grandma. The stereotype of lower-class/poor women as naive and stupid is insulting when they cannot afford the luxury of innocence in the impoverished society they are forced to live in. When they say a bad actor (in this case, an actress) can ruin a film, this is what they mean. One star for Audrey II and the other for the girls.
