Broad to a point of clowning, Wilder gives it his all, laboring to land all types of gags as he takes his Brooks-branded training and tries to make it his own. Go to Full Review

[Gene Wilder] needs better material than he's given himself to work with here. Go to Full Review

Enjoyable, very funny at times, immoderately stupid at others, and impressive considering that Wilder not only starred in it, but also wrote and directed it as well. Go to Full Review

The surprises are many, and the formulas bring forth pleasant antics. Not bad for Wilder's directing debut. Go to Full Review

Gerry W 06/13/2024 Comedy that appeals to a wide audience is much tougher to create than drama, and this film is the perfect example: I personally loved it, laughed a lot, truly valued getting to see such a great comedic ensemble cast perform this romp together (especially Madeline Kahn, one of my favorites of all time), and it happens to be one of my most cherished comedy film memories, but I get that it's not a film that everyone will enjoy. What makes us laugh and lifts our spirits in life is very personal, and this one was just a perfect moment in time captured on film for my particular taste. Frankly, at times, I was lost in feeling as giddy and goofy as the performers, likely with an involuntary, rapturous silly grin on my face. In short, I loved the experience. Everything, including the writing, direction, performances, and casting, was flawless in my eyes: I hope it brings the same joy to your life. See more David W @Sternhammer 11/06/2022 A great cast all perform at the top of their game in this hugely enjoyable and often hilarious comedy classic. The legendary Gene Wilder stars, writes and makes his directorial debut in this wonderful and affectionately made spoof of all things Sherlock Holmes. The humour can be a little broad and is a little of its time for some I suppose but as I'm a huge fan of this kind of good natured, goofy, slightly bawdy comedy I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. See more jon c 12/14/2020 Another one of the late Gene Wilder's earliest comedies. He also writes and directs the late Marty Feldman, the late Dom Deluise, and Madeline Khan. After starting in Buckingham Palace 1891 official documents go missing. It might be the work of Sherlock Holmes' arch enemy Moriarty. Turns out Holmes actually has a much smarter but lesser known brother named Sigerson. So while Sherlock and Watson are away on assignment it's up to Sigerson himself to solve the case with the help of Orville Sacker and maybe prove his skills as an upcoming sleuth. He also comes across opera singer Jenny Hill. Trouble is Sacker is wide eyed and a bit on the slow side intellectually. Sigerman is still getting started as his own detective. There's some funny laughs to be had in this spoof. Sorta along the lines of 'Pink Panther' and 'Naked Gun.' It's very difficult to be a hero in real life, but not impossible. The talented cast holds this together and the mixture of visual gags with humorous sound effects. The seriousness of the mystery portion and romance may not blend 100% but there's still plenty to enjoy. There's also enough dirty joke humor by Wilder showing his love for laughing at the traditional sleuthing stories. You can tell his heart is in the right place for silly antics. See more 09/16/2016 I turned it off mid-way through the movie... this could've been great, but.. oh, the agony. See more 09/15/2016 The cast from 'Young Frankenstein' reunite (Wilder, Kahn & Feldman), but with less great results. Some funny bits, mostly with Marty & Gene (i.e. the hot water vs tea bit), but plenty of stupid jokes too that aren't great, but are still OK to watch. Not too much is done with the Sherlock Holmes parody. Definitely not great, but not horrible either. See more Read all reviews
