08/28/2014 Though it's slow start and it's 2D-3D hybrid visuals may put some off, this animated film unravels into an enchanting and interesting fairy tale that's unique enough in it's telling of an epic quest to set itself apart from your average animated fantasy. Though it's plot does admittedly stumble in some places (a rarely, if ever, mentioned character is introduced at the end solely as a means of quickly fixing the final conflict of the film, for instance), the real divisive factor here is the animation; 3-D characters walk on a 2-D plane, in a style that reminded me personally of the ancient storytelling technique of using character silhouettes in front of a lantern, as was seen in some of the first animated films ever made and is thus fitting for telling a tale that feels as traditional and familiar (and yet entirely new) as ancient tales of quests told by those very means. For others, however, the animation will be nothing short of a complete distraction, with faces that aren't the most expressive and movements that seem far too mechanical to accurately portray life, especially compared to the background set pieces, that, despite being static, are teeming with life (a scene that visits Princess Chamsous Sabah in her castle is especially jaw-droppingly gorgeous). Ultimately, the verdict on the visuals will vary with the viewer, but if you're willing to accept then for what they are, you might find something to enjoy in this storybook of a film.
