Cowboy John O'Hanlan (James Stewart) is surprised to learn that someone's left him a business in Cheyenne, Wyo. He sets out to claim it -- and is shocked to discover that it's a brothel. Madam Jenny (Shirley Jones), who runs the place, is dismayed when O'Hanlan wants to close it down, but his plans are derailed when he finds out that a local customer has beaten Jenny. He kills the man in a shootout, and then must protect himself and the girls from the dead man's vengeful clan.

Redundant story line quickly becomes wearisome and cringe-worthy. The cast does its best but Gene Kelly's lackluster direction makes this one unwatchable.

A buddy Western with Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda on the trail to Cheyenne where Stewart inherits a bawdy house with Shirley Jones as the Madame. Funny and fun moments with the requisite shootouts. Underrated film. Critics didn't like it, but viewers, and especially fans of Stewart and Fonda will. There's just enough action, just enough humor, and just enough Shirley Jones to push this on to my list of 10 favorite Westerns.

Fonda and Stewart....two of the greatest of all time. I've seen this movie several times over the years but I watched it again last night for the first time in many many years. It's a story about a fellow who inherited a brothel. What struck me this time around is the approach it took to prostitution. The girls could not be happier and friendlier. Why, you'd want your own wife or daughter to work at the Cheyenne Social Club! Males of the older generations would surely like to think of working girls like this. But in this era when we're aware of the evils of sex trafficking and such, this movie is a shocker. Gene Kelly, the World War II era singer and dancer directed and produced. I love the Greatest Generation but this issue was a horrible blind spot for them. (They've got me thinking like a dang feminist!)
