Lewis makes the camera a prism to break out the divergent, and even conflicting, strands of his own character. Go to Full Review

With The Family Jewels, Lewis seems more willing than ever to acknowledge his own hostility towards being dismissed as a kids' entertainer. Go to Full Review

Eric P @RT06161622 09/03/2022 Once again, Jerry Lewis shows he is trying too hard in this film The Family Jewels. It's a story about a young orphan girl who is the heir to her father's multimillion dollar and must pick one of her uncles to be her next father (all played by Jerry Lewis) accompanied by her chauffeur (also played by Lewis). Jerry Lewis reached in his bag of idiotic and dull gags in this one as he tries to play dress up with all of his different characters. Each one of them have their own costume design that looks so cheesy and pathetic, it actually looks like Mr. Lewis just bought them at a dollar store. It also needs to be said that The Family Jewels had so much blatant product placement. But despite my harsh criticisms for The Family Jewels, there are so decent moments in the film. Even though the gags in the movie are idiotic, they can be funny at times. The film also had a moral. That we can't choose our fathers but we can choose our father figures and that's what the film is really about. Just like most films he directs, Jerry Lewis makes some slightly below average films but they all have a moral and complexity to them. The Family Jewels is not one of his best films but has a good message. See more 05/31/2021 One of my absolute favorite Jerry Lewis films where you get a taste of many of his characters. It's also a brutal commentary on himself as the clown, especially the circus scene. The curious moment in this one is when Lewis sits down and listens to "This Diamond Ring" at length for no apparent reason out of nowhere, until you realize that song is by his son. For a hard man like Lewis, it was a rather unique gesture to stop the whole flow of the film simply to nod at his son like that. He definitely made some interesting choices with his films over the years, but this was a rather sweet move which always stuck with me. See more 09/04/2016 Jerry Lewis is a genius. God bless him. See more 07/10/2015 Not the best Jerry Lewis film as it's very predictable. I did however love how they did the ending. See more 04/23/2015 Silly and hard to watch. Lewis plays several roles, which makes it even more difficult to watch. (I don't like Jerry Lewis all that much) See more 11/08/2014 This is probably one of those very divisive Jerry Lewis films, which will be a fun bit of entertainment for Lewis fans but would be a torture test for non-fans or casual viewers. Jerry plays multiple characters here, but is primarily the kind chauffeur for a young girl, Donna Butterworth, who's been left a fortune by her late father and much now choose between her many uncles (a clown, a pilot, a sea captain, detective, a gangster and a photography who's really just The Nutty Professor character), all played by Lewis. Lewis acts, directs, produces and co-wrote the film with frequent collaborator Bill Richmond. Like a lot of Lewis films for me, the gags don't always work for me, but it's the sappy sentimental moments that always get me. The end of the film and his sweet chauffeur character, Willard, are the stuff that really no one does better than Lewis. Not his best film, but it's one that always stuck with me for some reason I can't explain, though I suspect it's the film's ending. See more Read all reviews
