FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER is a feature film, though carefully constructed in the form of a triptych. The three stories all concern the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Critics Consensus

Father Mother Sister Brother is a subtly haunting, wryly funny, and visually poised triptych that transforms the banal awkwardness of family life into a bittersweet meditation on the bonds that persist.

Jarmusch’s film thrives in acknowledging the ultimate unknowability of our parents. Go to Full Review

It feels unhurried and a little old fashioned, with long takes and leisurely cuts lacking the pace of much contemporary cinema. But it’s all so careful, thoughtful. Some would say slow. I would say compelling. Go to Full Review

Jarmusch may never have sold out in the sense of going to work for a major Hollywood studio, but the Tom Waits character here, an old hipster not quite as unworldly as he looks, may be the most honest self-portrait this filmmaker has given us yet. Go to Full Review

Beyond the cool vibe that pervades the stories...one truly appreciates a certain naiveté and also glimpses of empathy, humanism, tenderness, and affection (though many try to downplay, conceal, or even deny it). [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Intriguingly, or perhaps frustratingly, there’s very little to say about any of these stories. Go to Full Review

This stylish triptych of family encounters is light and amusing, yet it asks little of the great actors in small roles, and is ever so minimal Go to Full Review

Bruce Mar 20 Very much enjoyed this. Perfect casting and some great symbolism and family dynamics on display See more Mike Jan 17 If you like Jim Jarmusch’s overall directing style and pacing you’ll like this movie. Very strong cast and vignettes that make a welcome alternative to the gory tentpoles splattering across screens right now. See more Brett K Jan 16 Back to classic Jarmusch. Three vignettes all dealing with family dynamics, warts and all. See more Ghederick Eshmont Jan 11 A brilliant, slow burn slice of life & family with impeccable acting See more Facebook U Jan 9 Nice movie with characters that we never really got to know. It was literally like visiting with 3 separate families to observe how they get along with no background or interaction. See more Justin Jan 9 I hate to writing negative reviews but this movie was so disappointing. First off I'm a fan of the director Jim Jarmusch. I loved most of his previous films with some of my favorites being Patterson, Broken Flowers, and Mystery Train. I can usually find something in all of his movies to enjoy but this is the first time I can honestly say that watching one of his movies felt like a complete waste of my time. "Father Mother Sister Brother" is the most boring movie I've ever seen in theaters. It was like watching paint dry. Honestly there wasn't a single thing I enjoyed about this film. I would only recommend this to fans of Jim Jarmusch and even then I'd go in with low expectations. See more Read all reviews
