Cue Herzog’s unmistakable narrator’s voice, as the search unfolds with – it must be said – less personal risk and more thoughtful processes than the usual Herzog protagonist. Go to Full Review

It will come as no surprise to the filmmaker’s admirers that Herzog relishes every step of the journey. Every digression here feels like a destination. Go to Full Review

It’s a wise movie that combines spirit and science, championing the need for (and inherent beauty of) biodiversity while highlighting the genetic ties that bind the majestic elephants, the African men and the Western explorers. Go to Full Review

Magnolia V 3h Its not a nature flick about charismatic megafauna but a marvelously beautiful documentary of one wild search, which ultimately reconnects humans and nature. See more Andy S @AndyFLA 1d Ghost Elephants had high expectations since from National Geographics and directed by Werner Herzog. Unfortunately, watching it was one of the most disappointing and unprofessionally done documentaries that I have watched over the past 10 years. While there are nice ethnographical parts of the local people, the scientific part regarding the "ghost elephants" was most unprofessionally done and lacked advice and guidance by competent scientists. Instead of failed, naive dart sampling of thick elephant skin for DNA collection and unethical disturbance of these shy remaining animals, only fecal dung sample DNA collection should have been done. Instead of a Hollywood drama-type movie, Werner Herzog should have used drone thermo-imaging at night to locate the shy elephants and subsequently entirely focus on collecting dung samples for DNA collection! In summary, a most scientifically disappointing and embarrassing National Geographic "documentary" - more like a drama-baiting Hollywood movie. See more Erik P @RT40606872 Mar 23 A masterpiece in visuals and storytelling of these ghost elephants. This is a hour and half of places you would never seen otherwise with the most stunning landscapes, rivers, sunrises, night skies and portraits of the natives. This is not just a visual spectable, the stories of the tribes go into their customs and how their beliefs are tighly connected to these elephants. Stories from their hunting and the poisoned arrow scene was unbelievable, making with bare hands, a poison that could kill a person with few drops. The wise words from one of their leaders also tells how respected these elephants are. The older footage that covered the war and the elephant ivory hunt could probably have used a bit more context and details. This is a memorable film, a feast for the eyes and you will learn why you need to respect these elephants. See more Cullen T. @freakbob Mar 20 A beautiful documentary about life and the search for the elusive. Don't let these people discourage you. It's was never a nature documentary to begin with See more Shitara B @RT37836259 Mar 13 This is the ABSOLUTE WORST narrating I have ever heard in my entire life! The guy narrating sounds like he is suffering from very painful hemorrhoids!!!! I could only stand 5 minutes of listening to him, absolutely horrendous!!!!! I had to ff a lot! And then this documentary was about..... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! After 2 hours, at the very end all we see is crappy video of the most ordinary elephant ever and they collect no DNA whatsoever. They accomplish absolutely nothing with this doc. Only good thing about it was Angolan guy bringing attention to how destructive humans are, the horrid murder of Henry only because he was unique, and how the uniqueness of animals makes them targets for humans to kill, stuff, and put in a museum. DO NOT waste your time!!!!!! See more Quinny M @ToothlessReviews Mar 11 This was the worst animal documentary I have seen in a while. The whole premise is that they are looking for a mysterious species of elephant, and the only footage they get of the species they apparently spent 10 years looking for is crappy phone camera footage. They couldn't even get proper DNA samples in order to compare these elephants to a known species... The only conclusion it gives is a text screen at the end of the movie, which says the results are inconclusive. Of the 1 hr and 40 min run time, there must have been a total of 5 minutes with an elephant on screen. Don't waste your time on this slow-burning, boring rubbish. See more Read all reviews
