Chris Vognar Boston Globe Jan 6
Extremely funny people often come from tortured childhoods, a dynamic the doc explores with care. But mostly Zenovich lets Chase squirm under the camera’s gaze and act like himself. Go to Full Review
Owen Gleiberman Variety Jan 6
Zenovich isn’t doing a harangue against “cancel culture.” She’s asking, in a far more ingenuous and exploratory way: What do we think about someone like Chevy Chase? Go to Full Review
John Anderson Wall Street Journal Jan 2
Mr. Chase still tries to be funny here, sometimes desperately, and isn’t. Which along with a career’s worth of ill will puts the sting in “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not.” Go to Full Review

In short, the production is very comprehensive, and the archival footage...is excellent, but the structure is decidedly conventional. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Surface-level understanding of professional achievements and personal woes, and Zenovich isn’t getting anything out of Chase’s participation, which helps to derail a potentially honest and illuminating look at a complicated man. Go to Full Review

The doc is eminently watchable and absorbing, and Zenovich lets the facts sit out in the open without judgment or justification. Go to Full Review

Mike P 20h Middling, mildly interesting biopic and documentary about the controversial and cancelled SNL star...(This is well made, but the subject matter isn't that stunning to me)...And the thesis is sorta, "We all know he's a jerk. Is that good, bad or indifferent?". I'm kind of in the second category. I guess... I did love him once upon a time in the 70s and 80s in Foul Play, Fletch, Caddyshack and the Vacation movies. But the collective weight of all these scandals over the years makes it hard to feel anything but animosity for him at this point. Just goes to prove: you can put up a front for awhile; for decades even; but eventually the truth catches up to you... See more Vincent S @Vin_E_At_The_Movies 1d I had a good time watching this entertaining look into the complicated career of Chevy Chase. There was a lot I didn't expect, and I ended up respecting Chase more. See more Sandy d @spdegro 3d Very well done documentary. I cried, laughed, furrowed my brow, laughed some more. the film we watched last night — it was very well done, and I thought it conveyed the background to Mr. Chase’s 'complex' upbringing with real care and nuance. What impressed me most was how the filmmakers avoided simplifying his childhood into a single stereotype. Small details — the production design of the home, the quiet moments between scenes, and the measured use of flashback — made the past feel lived-in rather than just explanatory. Chevy gave a restrained, honest performance that allowed us to see both vulnerability and defensiveness. Overall, I left feeling more empathetic toward Mr. Chase and more aware of how upbringing shapes behavior in complicated ways. Beyond that chatgpt pilfered write up, how can you not watch a biopic on one of the funniest guys on tv in the 70s and star of those hilarious vacation movies. You will not be disappointed. See more Aubrey G. @Alg2005 4d Very well done. He’s a complicated human as we all are and the filmmakers did a good job giving context to some of his more controversial moments, without letting him off the hook. He will always be one of the best comedic actors of all time and the documentary reminds you of the breadth of his career and its impact on future generations of writers and actors. See more John T @JohnnyT69 6d Chase is a flawed human being , like the rest of us. The difference is he had a well below average home life as a kid and then chose to go into the massively egotistical world of acting. There's no monster here. There is however a very funny, talented person who gave us some fabulous times during the 80s. Thanks Chevy. Caddyshack was simply the BEST !!!!!!!!! See more Matt L @Chubbski Jan 27 Totally excuse the ass back then (hen he was relevant), don’t excuse the ass now. Ego at its finest. Give it up man. See more Read all reviews
