During his farewell address to West Point, General Douglas MacArthur (Gregory Peck) looks back on his storied military career. Beginning with his legendary promise, "I shall return," at the outset of the Battle of Bataan and continuing through his troops' subsequent successes in the South Pacific, the film also touches on his anti-Communist activities following the war and his role in the rebuilding of postwar Japan, until his 1952 ouster by President Harry S. Truman (Ed Flanders).

Chris B @Papa13070 20h The opening theme of this movie when MacArthur is back at West Point delivering his "duty honor country" speech sort of reminds me of the opening music of Patton and maybe this is appropriate because MacArthur and Patton both had a lot in common one of the things is that they both had huge egos with a touch of drama that led to their downfalls. Gregory Peck does a wonderful job as MacArthur playing him as both a warrior and an egotist especially when dealing with President Harry Truman. Ed Flanders does a wonderful job as the President who was forced to fire his General. Flanders did another Truman show called Plain Speaking where he gave a great performance. The one thing I wanted to mention is that Peck does a magnificent job recreating both of MacArthur most famous speeches especially the one at West Point. MacArthur may have been a fraud in some ways but his story makes for a great film. See more David K @RT61474040 May 23 The problem here is that the production was clearly underfunded, using documentary footage for war action and re-used sets, never giving you a step-back, look at the conditions they're fighting in, feel for the film's subject. Peck is very good but the script only soars when he is speaking one of MacArthur's speeches. See more Andy M. @bt15735 May 23 Poor poor poor not up to Military reality standards. Peck a pompous ass literally See more mark G @Mark_Alan_G. May 23 It has the look and feel of a made for TV movie. The script is not particularly strong. And I think it tries too hard to make MacArthur look better than he really was. Generals like Eisenhower and Marshall knew he was an egomaniac that was more interested in getting attention than anything else. In the end the movie does seem based on an abridged and condensed story, and it's just not particularly strong. See more Yash B @yashbansal Dec 24 "MacArthur" is one of those historical movies that is no better than reading a history textbook. I don't think the story's narrative really works, and it often feels boring and unengaging. I really only think this movie is accessible to history buffs who already know a lot about this person going into it. The one silver lining of the movie is that Gregory Peck is genuinely good in it, and his performance is easily a highlight. Overall, it is a forgettable movie that feels like it should be a lot better, considering its intentions and the talent involved. See more Bill E @Billwill Jul 30 A great man. I like how he went to where the action was. See more Read all reviews
