A fabulous movie. High school buddies and I ganged up and went to drive in every night it was on for the laughs, emulated the Deltas at high school- got in trouble, belly laughed.. buddies who are still with us still utter some of the dialogue when we talk. A ton of movies stole the plot and emulated the movie, never got close to irreverent, hysterically funny Animal House film. "Knowledge is Good". It disrespects anything and everything including voluminous drinking, dating girls too young or the Principal’s wife, and wasting time in college, which is what most liberal arts students (like me) did. It’s a frantic comedy of put-me-downs and self-serving unabashed happy-go-lucky nonchalance. I love every minute of it and have watched it at least a dozen times. The character development is phenomenal. The humor is Pythonesque. A roller coaster of ridiculousness bordering on absurd. After watching this film, you’ll ask yourself which scene was the best, and there’s many to choose from. My favourite: when Graham Nash (cameo) is sitting in a staircase playing a boring folk song, I mean really boring, John Belushi, (Bluto ) is walking down the stairs and gets this angry I’ve had enough look in his eyes, grabs Nash’s guitar and smashes it to smithereens. It was well deserved. See more Melissa M @Lisey Jun 21 There are some LOL moments in the movie mostly are the scenes with John Belushi as Bluto. This movie has Bruce McGill & Kevin Bacon before they were big stars. In a lot of ways can see why it's a cult classic. You know any film screen written by Harold Ramis, produced by Ivan Reitman & directed by John Landis is going to be beyond hilarious. There's a lot of horsing around & horse play in this film. But the part where D-Day & Bluto talk Flounder into to playing a prank Neidermeyer's horse most people would say Nay. Even though Neidermeyer is definitely a horse's ass. Karen Allen plays Katy the most sensible & down to earth character in the movie. Donald Sutherland plays Dave Jennings a pot smoking, cat Loving, hipster. Mark Metcalf is awesome at playing loudmouth, over the top protagonists. This movie is one most the raunchiest, raw, risque, films of all time. Definitely one of National Lampoon's best. See more Timothy S. @TJSubject Jun 12 This film is pure chaos in the best way possible. From the dead white horse scene to Belushi’s absolute madness (enough said), this movie constantly pushes into absurd territory and never really slows down. The humor is very much of its time, but it still lands in a weirdly effective way even decades later. The ROTC gag, the “devil and angel on the shoulder” stuff, the ridiculous campus behavior, and moments like the infamous “hand job with the glove” scene all stack into a kind of comedy that feels unfiltered and intentionally over-the-top. It actually surprised me how funny it still is for a 1978 film. I can see why I never watched it before — the humor is wild and not subtle at all — but once you’re into it, it just keeps going and doesn’t let up. I was laughing most of the way through, even with about 30 minutes left. Overall, it’s a very good comedy for its era, even if the style is dated.
