Living in exile on the planet Vulcan, the ragtag former crew of the USS Enterprise steal a starship after receiving a planetary distress call from Earth: a space probe has entered into orbit around Earth, disabled global power on the planet and evaporated the oceans. Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and the rest of the officers travel back in time to retrieve now-extinct humpback whales, which Spock has deduced will communicate with the probe and send it away from Earth.

By far my favourite original cast trek movie. Light hearted, fun, funny with a great plot. The pinical of the great three original series movies. And funnily enough it's the one original series movie where you see the least shots of the Enterprise. Being only a moment of at least 3 minutes at the end and the recap at the beginning.. Apart from that the Enterprise is nowhere to be seen due to the entire plot. Time travel, Whales, one klingon Bird of prey and a trip to modern day earth. Full of lighthearted humour and the crew of the Enterprise getting on another enterprise to steal some energy to grab some whales and get back home. A fantastic movie. If only the trend had continued.... But it improved after the next movie. Throughly recommended movie for all trek lovers, but you have to watch the second movie onwards for the whole story to completely make sense.

I didn’t have high hopes for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home after the terrible part three so I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this installment. The story isn’t the best but it was just enough to capture my attention with time travel and whales. The acting is on par with the rest of the films but this actually had some humor in it. The special effects were solid for the time of the release. Is this the best Star Trek movie? No but it still was entertaining. I can see why Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home has such universal appeal. This is a lighthearted movie with a unique story featuring characters that were well-known by this point. And it’s amusing to see those characters from the distant future interact with regular people from more contemporary times. The environmental message doesn’t feel too heavy handed, either. Yes, it does lean into the realm of the ridiculous at times but, given the premise of the film, it doesn’t pull you out of the experience. Chalk up Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home as one of my favorite movies in the Star Trek franchise.
