Paul O @pjkeys Jul 24 A VERY low budget film written in the form of a play with no money spent on any props or scenery. It tries to be cerebral but falls way short of this goal because creating an AI girl is just not that thought provoking. Much of the first part of the film takes place in a basement with no windows and nothing but a tv screen as the main distraction. No special effects, just a girl talking on a screen, and when the AI model finally becomes material, it's just the same girl with a bunch of wires and tubes hooked up to her back. The film makers didn't even spring for a decent makeup artist to show one of the main characters as an old man. They just hired and elderly actor to play him, which made it look the guy had aged into another person altogether. Don't waste your time on this low budget turkey. Our technology gets too powerful for us to control, manipulate, use for our own goals/intentions...agendas (?). In this case, it's AI; like the highest form of droid, in a sense, once it's put into a physical human form. It/They can then choose to abide & carry out our requests, our directive. Or this tech can completely turn on the creators to follow an agenda/directive of its own choosing. Themes include inherent ethical questions, sentience vs. sapeince, & justifying deception for one's own selfish goal; even if the goal has an altruistic base. There's fine acting in general. Ritch & Nichols are esp. good. Lance Henriksen is impressive, as usual. But it's Tatum Matthews as Cherry who so aptly portrays an 'almost human' AI generation, driving home the themes & raising questions as the highly sentient 'girl' who dances w/ joy & expression in the last scene. Her range is stunning for anyone, not just one at her age. However, they work in an agency that protects children from predators and wants information about the girl Cherry, who works with him. They press Gareth, who was abused when he was a child, and learn that Cherry is a software he uses to get information to arrest predators, and Amos is his contact. Deena proposes the distrustful Gareth to team up with them to chase and arrest predators and reluctantly he accepts. Along the years, the AI develops while the trio gets old. The talkative "The Artifice Girl" (2022) is an original movie in three acts with excellent dialogs discussing subjects about predators, technology, emotions and how an AI may develop along the years and its primary directive to hunt down predators considers nasty many human behavior.
