The vibe is foreboding, horrifying, creepy, just all around a feeling of dread through the entire 95 minute runtime. It is tight, it is full of suspense and grief, and it is a genius way to tell the story like writer director Oz Perkins does.

Admittedly, the film's structure is more interesting than the story itself; if it had been laid out in chronological order, it wouldn't have been very interesting. But Perkins's eerie style is what sells it.

One of the best slow burns you’ll ever see. From the very beginning, this film is filled with dread, and it slowly carries on throughout the film to its very final shot. Ignore the mixed reviews from the audience as it’s filled with individuals who can’t sit through a movie unless it’s Michael Bay-ish levels of action from the very first frame. This is a master class of building dread and suspense. Osgoods best movie imho.

I wanted to really like this movie due to the director, actors and the various feedback I've heard and read. For me, the movie seemed to languish (yes, I know it is a slower burn and I tend to enjoy this style) and usually I like the pacing the director created in other movies. This director has created one of my favorite horror/psychological drama movies: Gretel & Hansel. The flip on the title for Gretel & Hansel I found interesting. Yet The Blackcoat's Daughter did nothing for me. I didn't connect to the story(intro, plot, conclusion, arch),to any of the scenes, the actors, music, nothing. Although separating me not liking something overall from a subjective perspective, to find it has good quality movie elements, overall explains the score. The two concepts are not mutually exclusive. One can say, "Hey, good movie elements but not my cup of tea"...

Really, really, REALLY enjoyed this one. From start to finish I was engaged, wondering, analyzing where the story would go. I loved the dark, moody atmosphere and mystery that built stronger and stronger. All of the characters' performances were stellar. Depth of character mostly present for our main characters. It had everything for me, from slow-burning, eerie occult motifs to brutal slasher moments. I loved the camerawork as well, the visuals and the setting. Bravo!
