Starring record-shattering comedian Nate Bargatze in his first feature film, The Breadwinner stars Bargatze as salesman Nate Wilcox and Mandy Moore as his wife, Katie. To Nate and their three children, Katie is the ultimate mom -- she manages their comically chaotic household with equal parts efficiency and love, and everything runs perfectly. But when Katie's household invention leads to a once-in-a-lifetime deal on Shark Tank and takes her on a prolonged business trip, Nate has to figure out how to keep the house from (literally) falling apart. He and his kids soon learn that while he may not do it like mom, he can figure out how to do it his way. Welcome to the dad era.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

As unlikely to ruffle any feathers as it is to drum up many laughs, The Breadwinner's half-baked jokes turn Nate Bargatze's avatar of the befuddled patriarch into one stale oaf.

A family-friendly movie that may win you over even if you’re not familiar with Nate Bargatze’s comedy, The Breadwinner is an old-fashioned good time -- clichés and all.

Standup’s comedy king of clean Nate Bargatze riffs on Mr. Mom for his screen acting debut. He deserves better than this phoned-in excuse for family fun. So do audiences. Go to Full Review

It’s not bad, but it’s not good either...stuck in a purgatory of a mildly entertaining comedy with nothing of substance to be remembered. It’s a lazy retread of its genre but it will make you laugh if you let it run it’s horse – I mean course. Go to Full Review

Even if The Breadwinner doesn’t quite capture what we need, it’s at least an attempt in the right direction. Here’s hoping it inspires other artists to make their own attempts—but to do it better. Go to Full Review

Bargatze wasn't really given anything to play, other than being an idiot at doing basic house chores. It's one thing to depict a man being overwhelmed with things he's not used to doing. It's another to simply have him be a complete idiot. Go to Full Review

Sherry R 4h It was a great movie! Nice to have a family oriented move. I hope to see it again. I laughed all the way through the movie. See more claire c 4h Very funny, slightly stupid and very family friendly See more Brian 5h Very funny movie for the whole family. See more Kelly 5h Very funny and clean! See more Mizelle 6h Regardless of the clueless dad tropes, Nate Bargatze still creates a fun movie that provides a 2 hour escape from the pressures of life. I am a widow, but I know my husband would have laughed too. No swearing, sex, or agenda. Just a lovely movie you can take your family to.
