05/21/2021 Set in the 70's in the Italian-American part of Williamsburg, Brooklyn (other side is Polish-American and it was a crap hole in the 80's early 90's and now so gentrified the prices equal Manhattan's). Santo a honest rising star of a bank get's dragged into making a deal with the local mob boss by his father-in-law; Paul Sorvino. He has to wash $60k in cashier checks. He is plagued by the death of his father whom died when he was 2 and he cared for by his Catholic Priest uncle. A typical local guy who hangs with his congregants and plays Morro with them (an ancient Greek/Roman hand game throw fingers down and yell out the number you think is out and if you get it you get a point) Also involved is the Secret Service (under Lincoln they were set up to stop counterfeiters so they do that, money laundering, wire fraud and President Protection) and he knows he is going to take down people but he like's Santo and doesn't want him as collateral damage in his investigation of his bank. His wife wants to go out to Long Island to live. In the end Santo moves his family to get out of the neighborhood. See more 10/18/2016 Amataeur in every sense. Dreadful and cliche lighting, stories (plural), characters, cinematography, dialog, and especially acting make this movie an unbearable 2-hours I'll never get back. The worst Scorsese imitation I've ever seen. You know a movie's shit when the only positive reviews come from Brooklyn residents. 1/10 See more 08/16/2016 First off, I saw this movie in a great little theater in Manhattan called Cinema Village. Great place to see a movie. Brooklyn Banker was so much better than any Indy film I've seen. To be honest, I saw it 3 times in one week. Troy Garity was outstanding and the movie was not only written smoothly, but directed wonderfully. Trust me, you have to give this movie a chance. If you like mob movies, but are looking for one for one with an authentic Brooklyn feel and a storyline that has not been done yet, then this is the movie for you. Plus, its not full if pointless violence for the sake of just having violence, every single action has a reason for happening. All three times I left the theater satisfied. And if you catch it at Cinema Village, you get a great deal on the ticket price. For the budget this film had, to me, it came off like a feature film. See more 08/15/2016 I worked in NYC in the 70's in the Men's clothing industry. I used to take clients to Little Italy once a week, and the film really captured the Italian neighborhood...friggin great. The story blew me away, and the acting was excellent. If you know anything about the hand game Morra, NYC, Brooklyn, Italians, the 70's, or are interested in the Mob, this is a must see. See more 08/13/2016 An original take on the classic mob movie. Smart, interesting, and thoughtful. Troy Garity and David Proval are at their best. A must see family crime drama. See more 08/13/2016 I lived in Los Angeles in the 1990s. I had a neighbor that was a film critic. Those were the days when newspapers running the world. I remember him fast forward a reel to reel movie because he had to make the paper's deadline. At the time it didn't strike me how really crazy that was. Here was one guy with somebody else's career in their hand and they were willing to zip through a movie when a deadline approached. I flashed back to that after reading the NY Times review of this movie. Either that or the Times movie critic went to a different movie than I did. THE BROOKLYN BANKER is a fine piece of cinema. Not just good but truly great acting, directing and script. I wondered how does it happen that most of the pay audience member rates it off the charts on rotten-t. The Press on the other hand does not Iike It. What is going on here? Either its (a) A fast forward job, the reviewers did not take the time to really look at Brooklyn Banker,or (B) what an earlier Rottentomato audience member Jeff Feinmann said. That is, critics don't care about great movies they care about sounding like hotshot journalists reporting esoteric facts about the world of celluloid or (C) The movie column at the New York Times is like the rest of The New York Times its become home of "all the news that fits". Here's what is important to do. If you love great movies go see the Brooklyn Banker. Its one of the best movies on many levels that I have seen in years Second, go on some site and review the New York Times. Tell your friends to go and see this movie and have them post on social media what they really think. This is a chance to #1 SEE A GREAT MOVIE and #2 help save film, and make sure the NY Times stops living of yesterdays reputation and these limousine liberals are sent off to face the fact that they are simply not with it.
