Wayne K @RT88290232 May 14 A classic feel-good comedy from the interwar years, eschewing the screwball style that was popular at time in favour of a more straightforward approach, The Young In Heart is not, despite what the title and some of the dialogue might suggest, about youth as much as it is about friendship and how one strong enough can drastically shift your priorities. The most remarkable thing about it is how well the character developed is handled. There’s no grand speech or moment where the characters suddenly realising that what they’ve been doing is wrong, they come to see it because of how their lives are playing out by doing the opposite of what they originally intended. There are still the remnants of big 30s acting in some scenes, but for the most part the performances feel authentic. Made during a time of optimism that would soon be snuffed out, it’s a simple film with a very wholesome message, and a very enjoyable watch as a result. It is about a family of grifters who meets a lonely, vulnerable rich old woman after being thrown out of the Riviera. Janet Gaynor and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. give excellent performance. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. Richard Wallace did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching motion picture because of the humor and drama. The Young in Heart is a must see.
