Always solemn, pompous, majestic. The legend of Tristan and Isolde is a tale of beautiful love, of enchantment, of magic, of beauty and, finally, of death. But what about the film? The plot doesn’t really get along with the Irish sagas. It’s somewhat similar, but the author decided to shrink it down to the size of a story about two hapless people who endlessly shed tears about something, mumble about eternal feelings, roll around in the bushes near a bridge, and, in the end, achieve nothing with all their meaningless actions. All the beauty of love and fidelity to one’s heart is washed away by Franco’s strange grimaces (I really liked him in 127 Hours, but here…), as if, at the start of filming, someone had dripped a magic potion into his eyes to keep them permanently moist. Add to that the utterly pointless performance of Myles, on whom the whole foundation of the tragedy was supposed to rest. The soundtrack, alas, doesn’t move you either. If you compare the film to Scott’s Gladiator, you’ll instantly feel the difference—even without saying a word. When it comes to the lines, I'd better stay silent. One single line — “Screw you”, shouted by a warrior during a duel for the king’s daughter — and you’re just floored. At least, I was floored. I have no idea where the director got the urge to turn a Celtic saga into some kind of modern family drama. The only thing clear is that the film completely lacks atmosphere and depth. So, If you’re not a nitpicker and just want to immerse yourself in a world of love, the film is watchable. Even with your significant other (men, I think, will enjoy the battle scenes at least). I’m knocking off five points purely for Franco’s unconvincing—oh, let’s be honest, downright awful—acting. The character of Tristan started British and then as an adult adopts an American accent? Terrible casting choice. He can not act. See more isla s @RT89656869 09/03/2022 This is a relatively fast paced epic style watch, a bit like Ridley Scott's Gladiator. There are some pretty impressive sword fights and it features hand to hand combat. The main performances aren't bad and while the plot undoubtedly features some cliches, I found it to be quite watchable. It doesn't quite have the feel (perhaps down to a lower budget being spent on this compared to other, more well known epic type films, I'd imagine?) of other Hollywood films of this type but its by no means a shoddy watch and indeed I liked that Tristans background, his sad start in life was shown at the start, as it helped me to sympathise more with his character and hope for good to come.
