In a Manhattan café, word processor Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) meets and talks literature with Marcy (Rosanna Arquette). Later that night, Paul takes a cab to Marcy's downtown apartment. His $20 bill flying out the window during the ride portends the unexpected night he has. He cannot pay for the ride and finds himself in a series of awkward, surreal and life-threatening situations with a colorful cast of characters. He spends the rest of the night trying to return uptown.

After Hours is hallucinatory: lit with the clarity of a nightmare and bursting with such surreal details as a cashier who pirouettes as he takes your check and a crescent of mousetraps guarding the bed of a demented cocktail waitress.

Hypnotic and dreamlike. It’s so compelling that even though it creates a lot of anxiety for me, it draws me in. The characters are not just oddities, but they are presented as real people with eccentricities that you want to get to know for reasons that are not always clear. It’s a film that I can watch over and over again. It’s New York.

A good film with a likeable lead, this eighties film is a fun, if a bit dark, and has aged well considering how old it is!! It does have some content to warn about, but if you like this director, this is one of his best and for a little over ninety minutes, not a bad waste of time!!!

Witty plot, you gotta feel his pain. We’ve all had nights we just wanna get home but this takes some beating. Good cast and everyone plays their part. Finally got a copy to watch it on DVD.

This is one to watch 10 times. It's OUTSTANDING! One of the best "A" movies ever made, along with Airplane, Apocalypto, American Beauty, All Quiet On The Western Front, and American History X.

Very cute movie, except some poor performance (like the barman) the movie feels like a cool nightmare or a fairy tell. Unfortunately Scorsese isn't Terry Gilliam so that's the best he could do
