In a Manhattan café, word processor Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) meets and talks literature with Marcy (Rosanna Arquette). Later that night, Paul takes a cab to Marcy's downtown apartment. His $20 bill flying out the window during the ride portends the unexpected night he has. He cannot pay for the ride and finds himself in a series of awkward, surreal and life-threatening situations with a colorful cast of characters. He spends the rest of the night trying to return uptown.

Wonderfully bizarre. It couldn't be made today; cellphones and debit cards have made almost everything that happens in this movie easy to resolve.

After Hours is a tiny gem. Low budget, one single crazy night, and somehow Griffin Dunne just keeps getting dragged into worse and worse situations like it’s his full-time job. Scorsese is ridiculously precise with the details too — the dollar flying out of the car, the keys falling, all those little things that make the whole nightmare feel even funnier and more alive. It’s basically an endless loop that sends the poor guy right back to square one, which honestly feels like a pretty solid metaphor for life. Also, go watch it, because it’s Scorsese’s only short film. Haha.

I watched "After Hours" recently to see the late and great Catherine O’Hara and she definitely did not disappoint as she was the brightest part in the entire movie. The mid eighties look of total despair and grime in New York was illustrated throughout to often surreal extremes. Griffin Dunne didn’t seem to pull off the comedy intended as the part was written to be annoying more than humorous. Waiting to see Ms O’Hara was the only thing that kept me watching until the end.

I’m not even really sure what I just watched. I didn’t hate it but I truly don’t understand what the purpose of the movie was. Basically anything you do or any curiousity you have will have consequences but you still have to get up and do the same BS grind all over again every day? Idk I want to gemive 2.5 stars but I can’t and it’s Marty so I’ll round up to 3. Weird weird flick.
