The sound of barrel-scraping during true-crime documentaries is becoming more and more frequent at Netflix these days... A Toxic Love Story is a welcome, if doubtless temporary, return to form. Go to Full Review

It’s something weirder, something that plays into our modern-day fascination with tech, obsession with self, the need to be the center of attention, and using psychological tools to manipulate the vulnerable. What a tangled, mangled web. Go to Full Review

Where the story goes may seem somewhat predictable to those versed in the genre but still plays out in such a way that it feels bigger than any one player in its unique "love" triangle. Go to Full Review

By letting the story breath and unravel on its own, the documenters show how to tell a compelling, hard to believe tale of obsession and despair. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Toxic Love Story is a reasonably responsible true crime doc that’s more substantial than you might expect. Go to Full Review

A Toxic Love Story is a good example of how a true crime documentary about a twisted love triangle can be effective with the right editing and without being overstuffed with too many interviews. Go to Full Review

Barrie A @RT44484472 1h I disagree with Christopher J whose "conspiracy theory" is total garbage. This is a film about a real case and it's on public record. It's a very interesting but complex case and Netflix did a good job making it worthy of a watch. No, they didn't give the game away until it was necessary because they were trying to make a documentary that is gripping by revealing the story in a way that holds your interest and curiosity. There are several mind blowing twists which make this a pretty good watch. See more Christopher J @RT46688457 5h The first half is great! Definitely very intense and interesting! However, when Michelle tells her story against Ian…it is more than obvious that it’s all bullshit! This is a woman that was in jail for months unjustly, partially because of Ian! She obviously wants revenge! The investigator that opened the case against Ian either has a personal grudge or wants to make his career better w arrests!…this is one of the most obvious and absurd "me too" cases I’ve ever seen! And the people at Netflix should be ASHAMED of themselves but they won’t! Because they have no shame!…to Michelle over exaggeration of having sex w another guy ( on VALENTINES DAY!) obviously her idea for a v day gift! To her "blacking out" and not remembering things! this is a MOCK DOC!!! This is just such a joke! Not one piece of evidence against Ian! Oh except the freak that tryed to rape a girl! His word is OBVIOUSLY good! See more Vincent S @Vin_E_At_The_Movies 21h In the You Couldn’t Make This Up category, A Toxic Love Story is astonishing, depraved but fun. The twists keep coming as you talk back to the screen, pause the movie and sat "What? Huh? No way!". See more Jason M @Nautius 2d Aside from the DOJ investigator, I don't think a single person was telling the truth. Not even the victim. The documentary left too many holes and unanswered questions. See more Michael V @RT41146758 2d Decent documentary, crazy story, TERRIBLE people. Most of the people involved are so annoying. -Some spoilers ahead- The only people I felt bad for and somewhat liked, are two people (the cop and older lady) that were interviewed about being duped by Angela regarding her fake cancer. The rest of the individuals were insufferable. Ian and Angela, obviously terrible. The Anaheim Police Department, stupid. Even Michelle Hadley who was the one falsely imprisoned was insufferable. Based on the documentary's footage, she didn't even TRY to legit defend herself when she was first arrested. Did she even have a lawyer?? They did digital forensics on Ian's computer to find out he was "Lilithistruth" sending emails but they don't do digital forensics on Michelle's computer to show she didn't send those emails? It's just so STUPID. Then the more the show goes on the more of an insane self-aggrandizer Michelle becomes. See more David H @DavidHHH 2d Loved it - indeed one of the craziest stories. Nice to see it shorter and more concise than many of the genre, although perhaps too much so as a lot of the questions were left unanswered. Wasn't Michelle more strongly protesting her innocence while in jail for 88 days and why weren't police following up on that? I guess that's why she eventually got a payout from them. Didn't Angela implicate Jason as well, once she was arrested? So then why did it take the DOJ so long afterwards to "crack the case"? I guess we may still get a fuller, 6-part series to come...
