Filmmaker Terri Flores (Jennifer Lopez) is traveling deep in the Amazon jungle looking for a forgotten tribe. Terri and her crew, which includes an anthropologist (Eric Stoltz) and a cameraman (Ice Cube), come across Paul (Jon Voight), who is stranded on the riverbank. He offers to help them find the tribe, but his secretive behavior puts everyone on edge. They realize too late that he's using them to find a legendary anaconda that's worth a fortune -- if they can catch it.

Brandishing goofiness like a sword, ready to cut down any naysayer who dares utter a derogatory word, Anaconda is utterly bonkers, it tries to be scary but fails so spectacularly that the fact the whole film is played straight only adds to its unintentional hilarity. The equivalent of cinematic cheese but equally consistent and cohesive in a self-conscious manner. A gloriously unashamed slice of jungle-bound B-movie chaos, barrelling forward with teeth bared and wrapping a paper-thin plot around one very large, very angry snake. The giant snake itself, a mix of practical effects and early CGI, is undeniably dated but oddly charming, delivering moments that are as entertaining as they are ridiculous. In its natural habitat, Anaconda can be appreciated for its campy pleasures, especially that of Jon Voight in a deliriously over the top and beautifully hammy performance in which he chews the scenery harder than the anaconda chews people.

Anaconda bears the stylistic hallmarks of 1990s mosnter features, yet like many others of its kind that have faded into obscurity, it is held back by mediocre production values, subpar special effects and sound design, and a shallow narrative framework—all of which prevent it from rising to a more distinguished level.
