Yossi S @RT40307701 Jul 24 This is an amazing movie about human nature. It is not a Holocaust movie, the author of the book, John Boyne, has admitted as much. John Boyne calls this a "Holocaust Fable". little research went into the book. No survivors were interviewed. John Boyne himself said that his movie should not be used to teach the Holocaust. This movie plays on the feelings of the audience to create sympathy for an SS Commandant. This alone should be a red flag to not watch this movie. There are so many actual survivor testimonies out there, obviously not enough because there were so few survivors, but enough child survivors to teach people, and children especially, about the Holocaust. Why watch a fable? If you need to teach your child about the Holocaust I would start by reading the Diary of Anne Frank. John Boyne profited by using the motif of the Holocaust to sell his fable. It tells the story of Bruno, a German boy, befriends Shmuel, a jewish boy living inside a concentration camp. Their friendship changes both of their lives. This film is set German and Poland during war II, near a Nazi concentration camp, and it last 94 minutes. The boy in the Striped Pyjamas starts Asa Butterfield as Bruno and Jack Scanlon as Shmuel, my favourite character is Shmuel because he is kind, calm and friendly. I recommend this film because it is emotional, thought provokins, and helps viewers understand the impact of perjudice and the Holocaust throrgh the eyes of children.
