Kimberly R @RT34678311 4 days ago Broken Land is a gorgeous and timely film. It is a deeply moving human story and not a political one (we need more of this in our fractured society). David Morse play this role with authenticity and subtlety, and he carries the movie with such grace. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the talented and stunning new-comer, Jaklyn Bejarano. I felt her pain and her predicament. The landscape is so beautifully shot and the set design really captures ranch life. See this film, it’s an original take on a story that you may think you know. It was remarkable. The details were perfect. J. T. Walker shot the picture on his own grandparents’ ranch outside Freer. Authentic Texas. David Morse plays Carson Tidwell, a widowed rancher in his seventies, alone with a few head of cattle and a house going to pieces around him. He uses the ugly old words for the people crossing his land. Then one night he fires into the dark at his shed and hits a young woman who turns out to be pregnant, hurt, and trying to get to Colorado family. Morse plays every inch of what comes next without a single speech about it. Morse’s change of heart is all in the hands and the silences. Jaklyn Bejarano, a stage actress from Mexico City, makes her film debut as Irene, and she is more than his equal. Bill Heck, as the estranged son who wears the Border Patrol green, is given the dignity of being right about some things too. The movie delivered on every single level, and left me in tears of joy. The protagonist is a fascinating and utterly believable character - irascible, sullen, and haunted. His story takes on big questions related to grief, suffering, family, and empathy without ever seeming heavy-handed. Originally called La Gloria after Walker's family ranch that provided the setting for much of the movie, this piece de resistance is a thoughtful and surprisingly moving drama that takes of of America's most politically divisive subjects (illegal immigration) and turns it into something much more personal: a story about two damaged people who unexpectantly find humanity in each other.
