Alfonso Cuaron stages some terrific set-pieces, and the production designers deserve credit for making London in 2027 look like the grunge capital of the world, ie, like now, only more so. One small problem: I didn't believe any of it.

Featuring a very strong cast and an unsettling dystopian premise, it is an absolutely arresting experience. The realistic, almost documentary-like photography highlights the grim reality in which the movie is set, Cuarón doesn't shy away from visceral moments but doesn't exploit them for emotional manipulation either, and the script doesn't pander to the audience. It manages to combine existential despair, raw realism and even a bit of life-affirming awe in a concise, consistent, gripping whole.
