Thomas S @RT53929595 Dec 26 Typical Gaspar Noé: an uncompromising psychedelic trip through the life, traumas, and accumulated mistakes of its protagonist. The film drags us relentlessly through grief, guilt, memory, and obsession, with Noé’s trademark excess fully on display. I was honestly expecting the final scene to end with Mario killing both lovers on the spot when he catches them making love — that kind of brutal closure would have felt very on-brand. One thing I still can’t quite get my head around, though: how exactly does Linda kiss Alex after he’s been eating garbage and sleeping outside for days? Despite the sex, drugs, and crime, the movie is really about trauma and that's where the feelings reside. The rest of the movie is modern emptiness, which Noe does well, of a cityscape where only individuals create the meaning but are shapes and colours with no meaning of their own. To me, its defining feature is its first-person point of view, which starts as very jarring and distracting (accurately reflecting the chaos of being alive) before shifting to a more relaxed, semi-first-person angle that still feels intimate but significantly more comfortable. The directing throughout the film does such an incredible job of making you feel what the protagonist is feeling (if it can even be called feeling) and that’s what really stands out to me. It’s held back a little by a weaker first act with some stiff acting and awkward dialogue, but as the film moves into surreality, these things are less noticeable. Overall, this is not a film I would recommend to everyone and at times it was a very difficult watch, but I love the effect that it had on me and I’m truly impressed by the visual, auditory, and narrative marvel of Enter the Void.
