Lexi H @LexiHenrion 3d Don't let the familiar premise fool you. What begins as a typical setup—a group of mismatched twenty-somethings renting a creepy estate for the weekend—reveals itself to be something far more chaotic and deliberately constructed than it first appears. The film's greatest asset is its jarring shift in tone; rather than relying on a slow, predictable burn, the script isolates the characters in the guest house and pushes them directly into a hyper-escalated supernatural siege. The film does real work earning its twist, planting pieces early enough that a rewatch would reward you. Valerie's arc, from skeptical outsider to the horror's focal point, holds the emotional thread together, though some of the supporting characters, particularly the crude comic-relief figure of Samuel, wear out their welcome as the chaos mounts. The final fifteen minutes, where motive, mythology, and a bizarre historical curse converge all at once, justify the wild ride. Great score as well. See more Jerome V @Jeromevalverde Feb 27 First House on the Hill is a stylish, atmospheric entry into the indie horror universe, channeling the 1970s visual sensibilities of Dario Argento while telling a modern supernatural tale. Story follows four friends who retreat to a decaying mansion in the Malibu hills for a weekend getaway. From the moment they arrive, something feels unsettlingly off. That creeping sense of dread lays the groundwork for the horrors that follow. Chloe Farnworth (Tera) and Christine Scherer (Valerie) deliver grounded, restrained performances that anchor the film emotionally. Strong lighting choices, effective sound design, and good production design create an immersive backdrop for the scares. Paranormal elements — particularly the ominous appearance of cryptic Tarot cards — add an extra layer of mystery and foreboding. For viewers who appreciate visually driven indie horror with atmosphere and supernatural intrigue, this film is well worth a watch. See more Read all reviews
