03/22/2021 I know they always say the books better than the movie. However it looks like the producers, directors, casting agents and so on took the book and wiped their behinds without to make this movie. Despite the film being horribly cast, and the acting being abysmal. The films missing key scenes. I don't know maybe I made the mistake of reading the book first, fuck knows how John Niven feels after seeming his frankly amazing book turn into this crap fest. If I had a choice of watching this movie or staring at the wall, I would gladly stare at the wall for 90 Minutes. Niven is a talentless writer and I would not waste my time with anything he writes. See more 04/16/2018 Hoult is incredible in this very dark comedy See more 01/28/2018 There is, I think, an inevitable comparison that comes up when you talk about films such as Kill Your Friends, and that's 'it's like American Psycho, but...' And Kill Your Friends is like American Psycho but not as good. American Psycho is one of my favorite films and KYF never reaches the same comedic heights, disturbing lows and Hoult as Stelfox is never quite Bale as Bateman. Now, that might not sound like a shining endorsement but Kill Your Friends, for me, was still a hell of a good time! Now, I have read the book multiple times, one of my favorites (same as the book of American Psycho, though I've only read it once) and after seeing the film when I read the book I can't help but picture Hoult, nor could I imagine anyone else in the role. Steven Stelfox I think is a very overlooked performance, Hoult is energized, unhinged and an absolute joy to watch. Stelfox can be smooth, he can be pathetic and he can be genuinely frightening and Hoult hits all those notes masterfully. As for visuals the film's aesthetic is nicely at odds with the violence and debauchery, juxtaposing the fantasy of getting rich in the music world with the true cutthroat and mean-spirited nature of the industry. Expensive suits, beautiful people, lavish hotels and grimy, horrible people all out for themselves. This aspect of the film is what never reaches it's full potential, the satire can sometimes be lost amidst the thumping sound track and Hoult's breezy but ominous narration. Ultimately to make a film, a study of character and of a part of culture, about wholly dislikable, unredeemable people who never face the consequences is always going to alienate some of the audience but if you're a fan of such yarns and if you have a soft spot for some nasty, pitch black comedy then you could do a lot worse than Kill Your Friends! Twenty-seven-year-old A&R man Steven Stelfox (Nicholas Hoult) is slashing and burning his way through the music business, a world where 'no one knows anything' and where careers are made and broken by chance and the fickle tastes of the general public. Fuelled by greed, ambition and inhuman quantities of drugs, Stelfox lives the dream, as he searches for his next hit record. But as the hits dry up and the industry begins to change, Stelfox takes the concept of "killer tunes" to a murderous new level in a desperate attempt to salvage his career... "Kill Your Friends" is a British dark comedy crime-thriller written by John Niven based on his own 2008 novel of the same name. It´s such a pitch black, graphic and intriguing not so very nice take on the music industry with a nod and a wink to "American Psycho". The story is different in a good way and Nicholas Hoult does a great job as the narcissistic Stelfox and we see a pretty far out supporting role played by James Corden. The soundtrack with the focus on the Britpop era is great and I do like the breaking of the fourth wall as it really fits the film. There´s also some resemblances to "Filth" with James McAvoy, that also has a protagonist with sociopathic, scheming, manipulative traits indulging in drugs, alcohol and abusive sexual relationships.
