See more Wayne K @RT88290232 Sep 10 Despite the noughties being a low point for cinematic horror, films like The Last Winter show that there were still reasons to be cautiously optimistic back then. Dodgy CGI notwithstanding, it’s a solid film, making great use of its location and characters to craft an atmosphere of suspicion and suspense. Ron Perlman gives one of his least discussed but most impressive performance as a harsh taskmaster that’s beholden to company orders, but there’s flashes of humanity that comes out now and then, which makes his character all the more believable. I love horrors films with an isolationist setting because it makes things so much more tense, and removes any easy way out for its players. The snow-blasted landscape is like an oppressive force in itself, and while the wonky computer effects are hard to overlook, the movie’s ability to make us fear what we see, and especially what we can’t see, it's what makes it so effective, and it’s the main reason I would recommend it to anyone looking for a horror flick that’s more than slamming doors, flickering lights and mind-numbing jump scares. Unfortunately, the film merely revolves around these ideas and messages without sufficiently developing or elaborating on them. I'm guessing it's from people who saw it as global warming environmentalist propaganda OR they made the mistake of not viewing it during the winter while in a cold weather climate.
