Wayne K @WayneKelso Sep 22, 2026 A film like Locke proves that you don’t need a million locations, flashy editing or choreography or even any real action in order for a film to be engrossing. You just need a good story and/or compelling characters. The film is a one man show in almost every sense of the word. Tom Hardy brings us a deeply flawed man trying desperately to make things right while juggling multiple personal and professional misgivings. It’s easy to condemn him for his mistakes but also easy to empathise with how’s he’s doing his best to fix them, as well as doing what he can to avoid the sins of his father, a character we get to know a bit about despite never seeing him. It’s tightly scripted, never outstays it’s welcome and the voice cast all offer their unique contributions. If you’re in the mood for a short, tight, unpretentious thriller, Locke is an excellent choice. Something was missing—but in a good way, like a kid with a missing tooth. I went into Locke completely blind and didn't realize the entire film would be Tom Hardy driving. He plays Ivan Locke, a construction manager racing to a hospital after learning a woman he had an affair with is in labor. During the drive, every phone call with his wife, sons, boss, and coworkers slowly unravels his life. It's utterly compelling. Hardy's Welsh accent is perfect, and there's a scene where he explains pouring concrete that I could've listened to for an hour. The relationships are so well written you always know who's speaking. Like a great meal, it ended with me satisfied enough to skip dessert. There was never even a scene change from his car, just endless phone calling. This is entertainment? What was this when it originally released, an art house film?! Omg, boring.
