See more gungi T @WhatWhere Sep 21, 2026 This is not the most elegant introductory shot of Scarlett Johansson, who was 17 at the time of filming, lying naked except for her underwear on a bed with her back to the camera, which focuses on her bottom. It certainly captures the character's sense of alienation and the feeling of not being seen, as well as her estrangement during her time in Tokyo. The film explores themes of self-realisation, the fear of loss, and the anxiety of wandering aimlessly among strangers, depicting the subtle bond between a young girl and a middle-aged man and emphasising the connection between two seemingly different yet similar stories. While the film's title embraces the implicit meaning of misunderstanding and strangeness, the scenes that explicitly depict miscommunication and the hilarious staging of incompetent translation make the slow burn a little more enjoyable.
