When Eddie Moscone (Joe Pantoliano) hires tight-lipped bounty hunter Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro) to locate a mob accountant named "The Duke" (Charles Grodin) and bring him to L.A., Eddie tells Jack that the job will be simple, or a "midnight run." But when Jack finds The Duke, the FBI and the mob are anxious to get their hands on him. In a cross-country chase, Jack must evade the authorities, hide from the mob and prevent The Duke's erratic personality from driving him mad.

Who said movies always have to be original? This one is redeemed by execution and brilliant talent: De Niro, Grodin, director Martin Brest, composer Danny Elfman, most of the cast and technicians.

I watched this probably 4 decades ago but couldn't remember much other than it was pretty good so I checked it out again. It was very enjoyable and well done. I've always liked DeNiro but for the last 15 years he's been so annoying spouting his silly political views every chance he gets. In this film Charles Grodin's performance was absolutely superior to DeNiro's. Give it a watch it's worth it.

I knew Robert Deniro was in this and I watched it anyway. Well, as much as I could. I found myself checking my phone and actively looking for distractions for the vast majority of this failed effort of a movie. Deniro just plays the same bastard in every role ever. It's boring and redundant. Yawn, this is the kind of movie that makes you wish you could instead go read a shampoo label instead.

Midnight Run is, in my opinion, the best classic starring Robert De Niro. It perfectly balances action, comedy, and character-driven storytelling in a way that still feels fresh and highly entertaining today. What really makes it stand out is the chemistry between the lead performances and the effortless mix of tension and humor. The film never feels forced; instead, it flows naturally from one moment to the next, keeping things engaging without losing its sharp edge or personality. It’s also impressive how well it was received critically, earning nominations at the 46th Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor for De Niro, which reflects just how strong his performance is here. Overall, it’s a smart, rewatchable, and highly entertaining film that deserves its status as a classic. I’d rate it a solid 10/10.
