Young lovers Walter (Tom Hanks) and Anna (Shelley Long) are house-sitting the New York City apartment owned by Max (Alexander Godunov), Anna's ex-husband, who suddenly decides to toss them out. Needing a new home, they settle on buying a country estate outside the city, which is available for a suspiciously low price. It soon becomes apparent why, as doors fall off their hinges, staircases come tumbling down and a bathtub falls through the floor. The couple's relationship suffers similarly.

It might not be revolutionary cinema, but The Money Pit is stupid fun all these years later. More than anything, it’s a testament to the longevity of Hanks and how far he has come.

Not only Tom Hanks and Shelley Long share a fantastic chemistry, the physical humor (full of brilliant set pieces) is first-rate and allows Hanks to show off his impeccable comedy chops.

I always crack a laugh when I watch this movie, easily my #2 Favorite Movie (My Favorite is the Terminator) the Kitchen Scene is my favorite part of the movie, that and the stairs are out, great movie

This was a mildly funny film about a couple who are getting kicked out of the apartment they’ve been living in and are forced to quickly buy a very large house to live in. The house looks great, stately, old, and sizable, but once they move in there are a variety of problems with it, both cosmetic and structural. There are laughs aplenty when showing all the things that can go wrong with a house that’s a “money pit” - stairs collapse, chimneys cave in, and the roof leaks in about a half dozen places that shoot jets of water straight down as though it is coming out of a garden hose. These scenes of housing disasters are often very funny. The story about the relationship between the couple that lives in the house is a little bit less entertaining, as they work through their trust issues involving the woman’s past boyfriend who is still in her life because she plays an instrument in his orchestra. The combination of romantic comedy and home renovation misadventures is an odd pairing but it kind of works.
