It has an all-star cast: Laura Linney (Ozark), Richard Gere (Primal Fear, Unfaithful), and Debra Messing, whose dramatic range continues to impress me. Based on the true story surrounding the 1967 Silver Bridge collapse, it's a paranormal thriller that reminded me of The X-Files. I love stories where unexplained phenomena are grounded in just enough science to make you wonder—this definitely had Mulder and Scully energy. Unfortunately, at nearly two hours, The Mothman Prophecies drags. I paused for a bathroom break and was dismayed to see 47 minutes still left. Much of the film is Gere answering eerie phone calls with a creepy voice on the other end. After the strong setup and Gere's meeting with Linney, the story never really surprises you. It hints at a romance that never develops and spends too much time in repetitive conversations. It started as an A but finished with an F. The Mothman Prophecies builds something far more unsettling: a constant feeling that something is wrong, and that you may never fully understand what it is. The film pulls you in within the first few minutes, and the pacing is one of its biggest strengths. It unfolds at a steady, deliberate pace without feeling slow, constantly feeding you just enough information to keep you invested while maintaining its mystery. Richard Gere and Laura Linney make an excellent pairing. Their performances help sell the increasingly bizarre events unfolding around them, making the supernatural elements feel believable rather than over-the-top. The ending will give you chills.
