Critics Consensus

A chilling ghost story that deftly reimagines Japanese horror conventions, Never After Dark pairs Moeka Hoshi's compelling performance with elegant craftsmanship and slow-building, inexorable dread.

Boyle and his collaborators take a few jarring creative shortcuts and by-passes, but pull off most of what they attempt. Go to Full Review

There’s a real thrill to be found in how “Never After Dark” taps into the temporal dimensions of its timeless genre, its blithe spirit gradually stiffening into the stuff of a Kiyoshi Kurosawa chiller as it confronts the dangers of a broken clock. Go to Full Review

With slightly stronger writing, Never After Dark would have felt smoother. Still, the film’s other elements come together to make it a nice horror piece. Go to Full Review

Writer/director Dave Boyle raises plenty of gooseflesh with practical effects using mirrors, body doubles and lighting techniques combined with ancient folklore, creepy make-up, exaggerated sound and inventive props. Go to Full Review

A terrific slow-burn horror film that evolves from a supernatural ghost story into something darker, bloodier and surprisingly emotional. Moeka Hoshi is excellent, the atmosphere is haunting, and the final act makes the patient build worth it. Go to Full Review

Elizabeth 2 days ago Great movie that felt creepy and sad but satisfying ending See more John 2 days ago Great creepy horror movie with a satisfying ending. See more Eric B @RT59758276 10 hrs ago I really enjoyed this film! Genuinely scary with great performances and great visuals. It's a really fresh take on the haunted house movie, with some real surprises along the way. Clever use of some camera techniques and the single location never gets boring. The sound design is impeccable, and it is reliant on the sound for the mood and the creepy vibe. A great find for horror fans. See more peter Z @RT59105073 3 days ago I'm not a big fan of horror movies; the usual comly cast doing stupid stuff and being picked off one by one. This a very different film. It's centered on a young woman who is an expert ghost buster, the two of them well known in the occult world. (Yes, two and it's not a gender choice; you have to see the film.) They are retained to rid a resort (occupied only by the owners, a mother and son) of a problem presence. Everyone does everything right and yet some pretty cringe scenes (not recommended for the very sensitive or young) happen. Clever writing, excellent acting and directing. a must see if you like horror, or even if you don't. See more Read all reviews
