In this animated retelling of the Book of Exodus, Egyptian Prince Moses (Val Kilmer), upon discovering his roots as a Jewish slave, embarks on a quest to free his people from bondage. When his plea is denied by his brother Rameses (Ralph Fiennes), the new pharaoh, a series of horrific plagues strike Egypt. Moses finally leads the Israelites to freedom by parting the Red Sea and drowning the Egyptian army. God then gives Moses the Ten Commandments, a list of rules for his people to live by.

I may not be religious, but I believe this is the golden standard for religious movies. The art and portrayal of the characters is captivating throughout the film. The animation gives weight to the powers of God used in the story which is only enhanced by the incredible music displayed. Most of the scenes could be screenshotted and hung as a work of art on its own. Although some minor scenes may be hard to understand without prior context, this film does a great job at keeping the main plot digestible. A downright incredible experience throughout.

This movie is a masterpiece! The cinematography and animation is just breathtaking! The movie makes sure to keep it as biblically accurate and non-controversial so every audience can enjoy it! Dreamworks made something that will be remembered for ages! Truly, a masterpiece.

How can a film that takes place in Egypt, which is in Africa, only have ONE person of color doing voiceover? That is shameful. Because of that, "Prince of Egypt goes from 4 stars to 3 stars.

Rewatched The Prince of Egypt with the kids and wow… it still holds up. They were glued to the screen from the very beginning, and honestly, so was I. The animation is stunning, the music is iconic, and the story is told in such a powerful, accessible way. It manages to be emotional, exciting, and genuinely entertaining without ever feeling too heavy for little ones. It’s one of those rare movies that hits for all ages — the kids were invested in the action, and I was over here humming “When You Believe” like it was 1998 again. A beautiful, well-crafted film that deserves its classic status. We loved it!
