John Mahoney (Frasier's dad) is superb as the girl's father, a man with a bad secret. Say Anything is one of the most charming high school graduation movies, and there were many of 'em in the 1980s. Smarter and not so cliched or sentimental, and it leaves you wanting more. Ione Skye gives Diane far more depth than the usual brilliant, unreachable girl, especially through her complicated relationship with her father. Cameron Crowe writes both teenagers and adults with intelligence, warmth and unusual emotional complexity. The famous boombox scene has become part of cinematic history, but it works because the relationship around it feels honest rather than idealised.
