I recently rewatched "Star Trek: Into Darkness". it’s actually a pretty good film until the major reveal of who the villain is in the film. Then it falls apart rapidly becoming nothing more than a pale echo of a much better film. It’s good that Abrams left after this film. He remains a magpie director (and writer); he’s better and borrowing other people’s ideas, repackaging them into a new shiny box nothing more. Even a series such as "Fringe" is a mixture of "The X-Files" and "Altered States" along with some other shows. Yes, the show did well because they actually had a good writing staff that managed to overcome the derivative origin of the series. The same is true of his "Trek" films. The script does have some merit to it but reinventing "The Wrath of Khan" was far too soon and the emotions not earned after one film with this projects.

Impressive visuals and strong performances, but the frenetic editing and rapid cuts overwhelm character development and storytelling. The relentless action leaves little room for the moral complexity that defines Trek. Entertaining blockbuster, but the soul gets lost in the spectacle.
