I enjoyed it... But the way it's set up, how it's shot, the progression of the plot - it's clear that it is offering up the story to a mostly white, bougie audience. It was voyeuristic in the worst possible way.

This film is a riot, those three girls are hilarious, listen closely to the dialogue it’s unbelievable. It’s very subtle. Every character in this is entertaining, even the girl behind the counter at the donut shop. For the first five minutes, I thought it was stupid, then when you see the old guy in the cab, it picks right up. Really well done.

Sean Baker is really good at making films that don’t shy away from showing you the truth about the society we live in. Sometimes it’s harsh but he always likes to show the humanity in it and that maybe it isn’t so bad after all. The script was pretty well written and had me laughing a bunch, the acting from Kiki and Mya really brought their individual characters to life. I had a lot of fun watching this.

Sean Baker’s brilliance started early in his career, as seen in the titular American Dream drama in Tangerine. Taking the viewpoint of multiple story likes and how they overlap, this film captures the daily struggle of the oppressed and misunderstood. Not all is forgiven, but a compromise is met knowing that everyone is human, and everyone make mistakes.

About 10 seconds into Tangerine, I put things on pause and Googled “is Tangerine a high school media arts project shot on an iPhone?” Turns out the iPhone part was correct – the rest, not so much. Once you get past the weird aesthetic, the erratic editing, the distracting score, some weird shot selections, and director Sean Baker’s odd obsession with sex trade workers, you come to realize that there is a point to all the mayhem thanks to some really smart dialogue and characters who turn out to be more vulnerable than they first appear to be. Is it all worth the journey? Maybe. Maybe not. But at least it makes the effort.
