I love the book and the message it sent across but the movie doesn't at all come close. I understand that not every little thing can be fit into the movie but you could've at least made it seem like you were putting effort into it. Read the book. It's absolutely phenomenal. I cried multiple times while reading it. The best eye opener. I just feel like the movie could've been made and presented so much better. This movie could've been something so great, right now it's just seeming mediocre. If you want to watch a good movie around social injustice and discrimination, FRUITVALE STATION. 10X better then this "movie" will make you feel like you knew him in real life and like your actually walking through what he's going through. That's a movie that will truly allow you to see what's beyond just news titles and everything else on the surface. I want it to be noted that I have no hate towards the actors in this movie let alone Amandla Stenberg. She's great especially in some scenes but it just doesn't seem as raw as the book and they're literally playing in front of you on a screen. Starr got depressed by this because a gang and callial killed her other friend was all she had left. She realized that no one would know how he died and that she was the only one who could speak about it. I recommend the movie because it helps to grasp how bad some scenes were. She wore 7s baggie hoodie and a pair of Jordans. 7's sister, Kenya, said, Ain't that my brother's hoodie?” from chapter 1, page 5 of the book. She also didn't seem to care about her looks. In the movie, she didn't look the way I pictured her in the book. In the film, she appears to care about her looks and dresses nicely, with her hair always done. This proves my point because you can get a look at what you would envision her looking like. In the movie, Starr and Khalil kissed while discussing their childhood; in the book, they never kissed. Chapter 1, page 9 “ nah, it was because you had the Harry Potter movies. What did we used to call our selfs, the hood trio?” This was the part where they kissed in the movie. This part made me enjoy the film more because it took a deeper dive into what kind of relationship the two had. This changed the storyline because Starr had an attraction to Khalil when he died, other than just their friendship, which is another reason why I like the movie better than the book. Starr had to stick up for Khalil. After all, he was dead, so if he were to get justice, she had to say something to get him the justice he deserved. I think people should watch the film rather than reading the book because there I am more of a visual person and I was able to see the details that I could not imagine when reading the book.
