While racing toward the town of Red Rock in post-Civil War Wyoming, bounty hunter John "The Hangman" Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh) encounter another bounty hunter (Samuel L. Jackson) and a man who claims to be a sheriff. Hoping to find shelter from a blizzard, the group travels to a stagecoach stopover located on a mountain pass. Greeted there by four strangers, the eight travelers soon learn that they may not make it to their destination after all.

While it's not his best film (it's far too long and indulgent at times), Tarantino absorbs the audience into a scene, compelling you to look at each and every inch of it--indicative of many vintage films (his usual film playground).

The tension simmers perfectly through the whole film, even after what appears to be the occasional reprieve, and with a cast at the top of their game, and direction that never feels like it's distracting from the core excitement.

When looking at Tarantino's filmography, The Hateful Eight doesn't hold a candle to works like 'Pulp Fiction' or 'Kill Bill,' but it's an entertaining film nonetheless — if you don't mind the runtime.

While this is not Tarantino's best film by a long stretch, the performances by Samuel Jackson, in particular & the rest of this stellar cast make it well worth your time. Jackson is a great actor, who Tarantino has given his best roles. Madsen, Roth, Dern & the rest of the cast are all terrific! The bloodshed may be a bit over the top but unless you're squeamish I dn't think you will mind. W/. the limited setting change, near all of the action takes place in one cabin room--Millie's Haberdashery this could be done as a stage play. I most likely will not return to this one, but you should watch it. The hanging of the female antagonist @ the end is a gas!

Ennio Morricone is behind the rarely present music, and the legend eventually earned a Best Original Score Oscar. Unfortunately this alone does not make a good western, basically thanks to a suspected cast portraying more or less pathetic characters, in what turns out to be a long and not very interesting or thrilling move against another director signature ending. Overacting and logical flaws is the norm.
