Brenton D. @TheaterBat Mar 21 Hard to put my finger on what I love about this movie but it just feels great, like a bowl of soup when a you’re at home sick. The extremely normal scenes filled with unremarkable dialogue create a feeling as if this is capturing the realness of boring life, which makes the events at the end truly shocking. Ty west is one of my favorite directors because of his ability to write interesting stories and pull amazing performances from his cast. Director Ti West creates some effective atmosphere with dimly lit corridors and eerie framing, but tension builds sporadically, and jump scares feel inconsistent. Sara Paxton and Pat Healy deliver engaging performances, their chemistry providing small moments of levity, though supporting characters are underdeveloped. The supernatural elements remain vague, and the tonal mix of subtle horror and dark comedy clashes at times. Sound design and cinematography are competent but never fully elevate the film. In its slow and undercooked narrative, it never manages to frame the hotel as a scary place, nor does anything particularly scary happen until everything is basically over and the viewer is left with nothing to do but shrug at the waste of a fun concept and somewhat decent characters.
