See more TJ W @RT46488278 Apr 28 What a charming wonderful movie See more Ben D @RT87620530 01/30/2025 Although it’s the weakest of the Allen-European trio — Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Midnight in Paris — To Rome With Love is fun comic fare with surrealism and with the “Eternal City” as a golden backdrop. There are four concurrent storylines that never intertwine, but all take place in Rome. John’s (Alec Baldwin), Hayley’s (Alison Pill), and Leopoldo’s (Roberto Benigni) stories are all interesting and fun, the fourth, Antonio’s (Alessandro Tiberi) is a weak link and a beaten-to-death, elongated trope of “Don’t let Dad see the dent in the car”. I hate this trope. It is this episode of Friends (“The One with Two Parties”), which incorporates the same concept that made me stop watching the series entirely. It is not funny and only exists to show Italians who are better off not staying in Rome. Although the “Can only sing opera in the shower” (Hayley’s) idea feels like it was stolen from The Simpsons ep, “The Homer of Seville” (2007) — wherein Homer can only sing opera from a supine position — it is well-crafted (if not a little rushed), nice to listen to and watch, and very funny. Hayley’s story is the only one that features Allen as an actor and the scene where he shakes Giancarlo’s (Fabio Armillato) hand — who is a mortician — only for the Italian to excuse himself so he can “wash up”, is a laugh-out-loud funny moment. This movie gets a bad rap and definitely does not deserve the terrible RT (47/40) score. If Woody simply cut Antonio’s story and beefed up the other three, this would be a much more highly regarded movie. The disparate story lines are far fetched and just downright annoying. The writing is horrendous and some really good actors are made to look like primary school theater kids without any experience.
