If the pleasures of The Usual Suspects are the more superficial ones of ingenuity and style, those are abundantly available. The twists and turns of the plot are an awful lot of fun, while the ending is genuinely satisfying and surprising.

With one Internet to rule them all, it's hard for most folks to avoid cinematic spoilers of yore (whether it's the sled in Citizen Kane or the penis in The Crying Game), but even knowing the answer shouldn't spoil this film's myriad other pleasures.

I don't really like these types of caper flicks, but this is one where I can appreciate the effort that went in to it. When you see an arthouse flick with lots of flashbacks and tricks, this is what they are trying to emulate. One of the few movies that did flashbacks effectively. Very strong cast and vortex of a plot that sucks you in. Yeah, I could see the twist coming from about 1/2 way, and the cops were all morons, but otherwise well done.

The Usual suspects is a complicated 3 stars because the movie had a complicated story. Full disclosure: I had the twist spoiled 8 years before I saw anything else about this movie. So automatically it wasn’t as impactful for me. The story spends the first 40 minutes just setting up the pieces. Once it does final start moving the pieces it was throughly engaging. I just wish it had kicked into gear sooner.
