At its core, the film explores the balance between independence and protection, showing how complicated and meaningful that bond can truly be. The emotional push and pull between the characters gives the story its strongest moments and helps it feel personal and impactful. The performances are what really hold everything together, bringing sincerity and emotional weight to a screenplay that does not always go as deep as it could have. Without the actors, some of the quieter moments may have fallen flat, but their chemistry keeps the film engaging and believable. It is not a perfect movie, and there are definitely some pacing issues and missed opportunities throughout, but it still delivers enough emotional truth and character development to make it worth watching. Yet, Bill Pullman is like a big grizzly Hollywood bear who seems to sniff out these kinds of movie roles, I'm surprised his wasn't bigger. I don't care if they are trying to portray an awkward and strained relationship between the father and son, no one talks like that. Pacing already felt very strange too, don't think I will ever come back to this movie regardless of the 92% Critic Score. See more SIAN M @RT08286535 10/22/2024 This film is visually beautiful, but it's hard not to get annoyed by how the deeply flawed actions of the father are almost presented as endearing or admirable, instead of fatally stupid. Ultimately the hubris and arrogance of the father landed them in a situation that could have very easily led to death of his son, himself, or both. During one of the scenes the son hallucinates / has a dream about his father telling him that all the mountains he can see belong to him. It's exactly this lack of humility and lack of perspective displayed by the father that leads to their situation. See more Bree V @RT67497352 10/13/2024 I feel like this is a film that you would probably connect with better if you had the father-son bonding experiences of hunting as a youngster. I (being female and also not having a hunting dad) did not, so the first half was pretty hard to get through. But after everything goes wrong, and the young man finds his strength, I started to appreciate it. The way they showed the two of them leaned on each others' opposing strengths was touching. The scenery was totally spectacular and showcased just how unforgiving the terrain can be. If you're looking for a hollywood disaster movie, this ain't it.
