Fourteen-year-old Joe is the only child of Jeanette and Jerry -- a housewife and a golf pro -- in a small town in the 1960s Montana. Nearby, an uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border, and when Jerry loses his job -- and his sense of purpose -- he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Suddenly forced into the role of an adult, Joe witnesses his mother's struggle as she tries to keep her head above water.

I was excited to watch this because I love Jake Gyllenhaal, but this was honest such a boring movie. I was actively struggling to keep my eyes on my screen. The only good part of the movie was the last 20 minutes, which also really wasn't that great. I wouldn't recommend this movie. The acting was good, but the story not so much.

Poor Joe. He’s really put in the middle of his parents emotional breakdowns. Great acting. I’m surprised the actor who played Joe hasn’t been in more productions. He was fantastic.

Exceptionally quiet, unpretentious, intimate, personal, little film encompassing class, struggle, personal struggle, desperation. A Coming of Age film as seen from the eyes of a young Man who's whole basis of security and reality is crumbling as his parents marriage is falling apart. Brilliantly directed by Paul Dano, an actor I much admire for his roles in films such as There Will Be Blood.

Synopsis
